Farm story

The story's roots in 1731

The Jänisvaara farm has a long and vibrant history – it has been inhabited continuously since 1731. Over the generations, the farm has seen many phases: the ups and downs of livestock farming, post-war construction work, farming, forestry work and the everyday life of a small farmer. At the same time, the landscape has remained the same: rolling fields, blue Lake Pielinen and the peace of the forest edge.

The current entrepreneur, Erkki Mustonen, is the ninth generation of the farm. He took over his home farm in 1991 and decided that the heritage would get a new lease of life. This is how Farm Tourism Jänisvaara was born – a place where history, silence and closeness to nature meet.

Life in the rhythm of the farm

Jänisvaara still lives in the farm's own rhythm. Organic blackcurrants are grown on an area of seven hectares, and the harvest is used for the farm's own juice production and sold directly to customers. The connection to the farm's long tradition of livestock farming is maintained through small-scale livestock operations. Forest and field work is still part of everyday life, but over the years the focus has increasingly shifted to tourism.

Today, Jänisvaara offers visitors simple accommodation and a genuine rural atmosphere. You can stay overnight in a cottage or barn, wake up to birdsong and make coffee at the yard table. You can spend the day rowing, hiking or baking snacks at the lean-to. There are swings, a sandbox and a yard for children to play freely.

The barn was built with apples

There are many stories about the farm's history, but one of them stands out: after the war, a new barn was built and the funding for it was obtained by selling apples. It encapsulates the spirit of Jänisvaara – perseverance, ingenuity and the ability to see opportunities in the midst of challenges.
