Organic blackcurrant cultivation has long roots and a warm story in Jänisvaara.
The current berry orchard was started in 2016, but its roots go back to the apple orchard of the 1920s. Organically grown blackcurrants grow in the old cultural landscape of Koli - in the same place where generations have cherished gardening traditions.
Organic and local food - the story continues
Two blackcurrant varieties are grown in Jänisvaara: Marskia and Mikaelia. The berries grow without artificial fertilizers or pesticides, in the rhythm of nature and in a carefully managed environment. Blackcurrant juice is made by fresh pressing and is available directly from the farm. The majority of the harvest ends up in the freezer for further processing.
The Mikael variety has won taste tests with its sweetness and fullness, and Marski, on the other hand, convinces with its large size. The berries are efficiently collected with a berry harvester, but willing customers can also pick them themselves in late August. Picking your own berries is a nice addition for many holidaymakers or local residents.
Traditions on the edge of the fields
Berry growing didn't start just for the harvest – it's a way to keep the environment well-maintained and the landscape alive. The cultivated landscape remains open and well-maintained, which brings joy to visitors and farmers alike. The history of the family farm plays in the background – the farm has been inhabited since 1731, and people still live there in the rhythm of nature and agriculture, even maintaining small-scale livestock farming.
